Grand Canyon wants to finish its 17-year run at Antelope Gymnasium on a good note.
The Antelopes are one and one-half games out of first place in the Pacific West Conference heading into tonight’s home finale against Notre Dame de Namur.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. GCU will move into its new 5,000-seat on-campus facility, Grand Canyon University Arena, next season.
First things first, GCU is hopeful tonight’s game will help start a regular season-ending run that will propel them into the postseason. The Pacific West Conference champion gets an automatic berth into the NCAA West Regional.
Currently, Chaminade and BYU-Hawai’i lead the PacWest with 10-2 records. Dixie State is 9-2 and GCU is 8-3.
Grand Canyon and Dixie State finish their seasons on four-game road trips to the islands, taking on the two league-leaders along with Hawai’i-Hilo and Hawai’i Pacific.
“We’re still in the race. There are a lot of games to be played and we still have a chance,” said GCU junior
Justin Wesolowski.
Along with the conference champion, the PacWest is hopeful to get at least one more team, possibly two, into the West Region. Eight teams are picked from the PacWest, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Greater Northwest Athletic Conference. Both the CCAA and GNAC conference tournament champions get automatic bids. The PacWest does not have a post season tournament.
