Grand Canyon extended its record home winning streak to 11 with a 74-56 Pacific West Conference win over Academy of Art at Antelope Gymnasium Thursday.
The Antelopes, ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll and No. 6 in the NCAA West Region, improved to 19-2 overall and 7-1 in the PacWest. Academy of Art dropped to 7-13 and 5-6.
It was the 200th head coaching win for Trent May, who is 200-89 overall and 73-32 at GCU. He is Grand Canyon’s all-time winningest coach.
“The Lord has blessed me and allowed me great opportunities and put me in good situations,” said May. “As any good coach knows, you have to have a great coaching staff. I have a great staff of coaches and they’ve done a great job with our players ... and I have great players.”
GCU led by only four points, 47-43, with 11:13 to go.
“Patience,” said May, was the key to his team being able to pull away in the latter part of the second half. “We had to be patient on offense and we settled down in the second half while our defense stayed the same.”
GCU went on a 15-2 run to take control 62-45 with 6:13 remaining.
Grand Canyon shot just 32.4 percent (11-of-34) in the first half, including 0-for-7 from 3-point range. Still, it managed a 28-24 lead. The Antelopes were aided by 17 Urban Knight turnovers. GCU led 20-10 at the 6:47 mark, but were outscored 14-8 the remainder of the period.
GCU will welcome Dominican for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday.
