Grand Canyon University senior outfielder
Teddy Barry (Glendale, AZ/Greenway, Phoenix College) has been named 2011 Pacific West Conference Preseason Player of the Year and the Antelopes are predicted to finish in third place in the Conference.
Barry also has been named to the 2011 PacWest Preseason All-Conference Team. She is the only GCU player selected for that honor.
The PacWest Preseason All-Conference Team, Player and Pitcher of the Year, and predicted order of finish were announced today on the PacWest's Internet broadcast of its annual Softball Media Day.
Barry was named to the Daktronics, Inc. All-America Team and Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-West Region First Team last season. She also was selected PacWest Player of the Year, PacWest Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-PacWest after leading the Conference in RBI (64), doubles (20), home runs (14), total bases (146) and slugging percentage (.816). She ranked second in hits (80), runs scored (64) and on-base percentage (.517); third in batting average (.447) and stolen bases (26); and fourth in walks (28).
She also had 64 put outs, eight assists, only one error and a .986 fielding percentage.
In 2010, under Head Coach Ann Pierson, GCU was selected for the NCAA Division II Softball Championships for the first time in the program's seven-year history. The 'Lopes finished with a record of 43-13 overall, 23-9 in the PacWest.
GCU received one first-place vote in this season's PacWest preseason poll. Dixie State, which finished in second place last year, received four first-place votes and is picked to win the Conference title this season. Hawai'i Pacific, which won the Division II national championship last year and had a record of 50-8 overall and 26-4 in the PacWest, also received four first-place votes and is predicted to come in second. GCU finished in third place last season and Hawai'i Hilo, which is projected to end up fourth this year, came in fourth.
The 'Lopes open the 2011 season on Friday, when they face Western New Mexico at 11 a.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay at 1:30 p.m. on the first day of the three-day GCU Invitational at Quail Run Sports Complex in Mesa. They play Midwestern State at 11 a.m. and Western New Mexico at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and Cal State Monterey Bay at 10 a.m. and Midwestern State at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
