Grand Canyon University recently hosted two of the world’s finest women’s soccer teams when Sweden played Canada in a match at GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
The match was an international friendly game between the full international “A” teams of both Sweden and Canada and included numerous World Cup stars such as Jessica Landstrom and Lotta Schelin from Sweden and Christine Sinclair from Canada.
Grand Canyon University was selected by the two squads as they needed a facility that could host the demands of both the match itself and the practices required before it. Both teams trained on the soccer field before their match as well as used the new GCU Recreation Center to meet their pre and post-game needs.
The Recreation Center is a 55,000 square-foot playground featuring three basketball courts and practice facilities for wrestling, basketball, and volleyball. The facility features state-of-the-art men's and women's locker rooms, athletic training facilities and a student fitness center.
“The beautiful weather this time of year down in Phoenix, it really is a destination for many of the International teams to come here and train,” said GCU women’s head coach Stevie Gill. “Our new soccer field and other facilities here at GCU are top notch and the squads love it. It was great to see Canada and Sweden train out here and then play in a closed match here at GCU. It gives our players an opportunity to watch some of the best players in the world right in our backyard.”

“Both Canada and Sweden are among the Top-10 teams in the world”, added Gill. “This was a great opportunity to showcase all that GCU has to offer both athletically and academically to players from around the world. We will be working hard to bring in other international and professional soccer teams to GCU in the near future that will certainly help put GCU on the map in the world of soccer here in the southwest.”
The Grand Canyon University women’s team advanced to the NCAA Tournament this season for the time in school history. GCU is led by fourth-year head coach and alum, Stevie Gill.
