Grand Canyon evened its dual meet record at 1-1 with a 30-6 victory at Embry-Riddle, No. 16 in the NAIA poll, in Prescott, Ariz. Wednesday.
Ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, GCU won nine of 10 matches.
“Our young guys are starting to learn what it takes to wrestle at the college level and put together seven strong minutes,” said GCU head coach R.C. LaHaye. “They’re stepping up for some of our starters that aren’t quite ready yet. It’s good to see how much depth we have.”
Grand Canyon got off to a good start when
Kyle McCrite, ranked No. 7 in the nation, defeated Sean Silva, ranked No. 2 in NAIA 3-1. It was McCrite’s second win this season over Silva.
Avenging an earlier season loss,
David Wilber took the 165 contest over Luke Riley 5-3.
Staying unbeaten on the season,
Celic Bell got down early before rallying for a 16-14 win against Shawn Michalek at 197.
Heavyweight
Jordan Johnson, whose only loss this season came to a nationally-ranked Division I wrestler, earned the lone GCU win by fall, finishing off Garett Foster in 5:17 to wrap up Wednesday’s dual victory.

Justin Martin and
Brett Sanchez all picked up wins by decision.
Moore’s 6-1 win over Jess Routsong let GCU regain the lead, 9-6, and started a run of seven straight victories. Miller followed with an 8-5 victory over Matt Hamilton at 157. Martin downed Jose Cruz 10-8 after Wilber’s victory to take the 174 contest and Sanchez preceded Bell and Johnson triumphs with a 10-4 win against Jonathan Castellow in the 184 class.
Estrada followed up McCrite’s opening victory with a convincing 11-3 win over Trace Gutknecht at 133.
GCU will see many of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes Saturday at the Colorado Mesa Open before returning home to host the Grand Canyon Duals on Dec. 31 at Grand Canyon University Arena.
