Grand Canyon returns to action this weekend with a pair of non-conference games. Tonight they will host Saint Martin’s at 6 p.m. at GCU Arena.
VS. SAINT MARTIN’S: GCU owns a 3-1 lead in the overall series. The Antelopes and Saints split a pair of meetings during the 2009-10 season. GCU also defeated Saint Martin’s during the 1999-2000 and 2006-07 seasons.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU is preparing for its sixth home game in a stretch of eight straight. GCU will not hit the road again until Jan. 3, when it plays at Dominican.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon cruised to a 69-49 win over Northern New Mexico. The ‘Lopes were led by Braylon Pickrel who had 12 points, a career-high tying 10 rebounds and career-best four blocks. Nick Witherill added 11 points. GCU forced NNMC into 21 turnovers and had 11 steals and 10 blocked shots.
STREAKING: GCU is off to their best start since going 9-1 to begin the 2005-06 season. The ‘Lopes have won five straight, their most consecutive wins since winning five straight from Dec. 17, 2010 – Jan. 18, 2011. The team closed out the 2009-10 season with six-straight wins.
COX 7 IS IN THE HOUSE: This evening’s game will be broadcast by Cox 7 in Phoenix. Kevin Ray will handle the play-by-play duties, while GCU’s Dan Nichols will serve as the analyst for the broadcast. Cox 7 also broadcast the Nov. 25 game against Seattle Pacific. In addition to the college games Cox will be covering, they are scheduled to telecast four high school games from GCU Arena on Jan. 5, 12, 26 and Feb. 2. Each game will begin at 7 p.m.
SPEED SPEAK: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in four of his five games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in three of those games. His 13.4 points-per-game ranks eighth in the PacWest.
QUITE A SHOWING: Junior Braylon Pickrel has made an early impact on the season, averaging 6.0 rebounds-per-game. Pickrel scored 12 points, a career-high tying 10 rebounds and career-best four blocks in the win over NNMC on Dec. 10. He scored a career-best 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting with four rebounds in 16 minutes against UNLV. For his efforts, he was named to the PacWest Honor Roll. Pickrel played limited minutes last year after returning from a church mission.
UP NEXT: Grand Canyon will be in action again tomorrow when they host Cal State San Bernardino at 6 p.m. at GCU Arena.
