Grand Canyon University’s wrestling program opens the regular season Saturday at the Roadrunner Open in Bakersfield, Calif.
Ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, GCU is one of 12 teams (six nationally-ranked) competing in the event hosted by Division I CSU Bakersfield.
Five Division I teams will participate. Along with the hosts, Stanford (No. 14), Oregon State (No. 22), Cal Poly (No. 25) and Arizona State will be there.
Along with GCU, fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe San Francisco State (No. 19) and Menlo (No. 14 in NAIA) are the other ranked teams. Other teams wrestling Saturday are Bakersfield College, California Baptist, Cerritos and Palomar.
“We are excited to get on the mats and see some outside competition,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “There are several (Division I) teams coming, so it will be a great tournament to see where we stand right away.”
The 2011-12 GCU wrestling team returns to two-time All-American Victor Carazo (174), All-American Ted Bristol (157) and national-qualifier Madison Gambrell (141).
Senior Jordan Johnson (285) and Carazo were both selected preseason All-RMAC. Carazo, Bristol, Johnson, Kyle McCrite (125) and Bobby Ward (149) were all-ranked nationally in their weight classes in the preseason Basford Poll. Celic Bell (194), Lino Estrada (133) and Gambrel were placed high in the West Region 4 rankings.

When the ’Lopes return home they will be preparing for the annual dual meet with Arizona State. GCU and ASU grapple Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena. A pre-match GCU tailgate party will begin at noon.
