The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team is ranked No. 10 in the West Region in this week's official NCAA Division II poll and is tied for No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America vote.
The NCAA and NSCAA polls were released yesterday and Tuesday, respectively.
The Antelopes (9-5-2 overall, 8-2-1 in the PacWest) are in second place in the Pacific West Conference behind California Baptist (13-2-1, 9-1-1). The Lancers already have clinched at least a co-championship in the conference, but they will not receive the PacWest's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament because they are in their first season at the Division-II level after moving up from the NAIA. Teams are not eligible for postseason until their third year in D-II.
BYU-Hawaii (11-3-1, 7-3-1) was in second place and had a chance to control its own destiny by winning its final two regular-season matches, both at home, against Hawai'i Pacific (10-5-2, 7-3-2) yesterday and Chaminade (1-15-0, 1-10-0) on Saturday.
The Seasiders lost 2-0 to the Sea Warriors, however, and now must rely on Dixie State to defeat GCU today and then hope they win the tie-breaker, goals allowed in conference games.
The 'Lopes, meanwhile, can clinch the tournament berth by beating or tying the Red Storm (7-7-2, 5-3-2) today in St. George, Utah. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. Arizona time.
It would be the first postseason appearance in the 16-year history of GCU's women's soccer program.
The 'Lopes are ranked No. 39 out of 330 ranked schools nationally in scoring offense (1.85 goals per game), No. 69 in won-lost-tied percentage (.625) and No. 75 in shutout percentage (.375).
Junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun), the 2010 PacWest Player of the Year, ranked No. 25 nationally in points per game (1.85), No. 37 in goals per game (0.692) and No. 42 in assists per game (0.46).
