Grand Canyon is ranked No. 5 in the nation and five wrestlers are also receiving nationally recognition in the recently released Basford NCAA Division II Preseason Poll.
GCU trails Newberry, St. Cloud State, Upper Iowa and Nebraska-Kearney, respectively.
The ‘Lopes will wrestle No. 1 Newberry and No. 2 St. Cloud State in the Grand Canyon Duals Dec. 31 at GCU Arena.
“Our program is moving in the right direction and it is nice to see others take notice, however our goal is not to finish fifth in anything,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “We have a lot of work to do to reach our goals for this season.”
Senior Victor Carazo is ranked second at 174. Senior Ted Bristol is No. 4 at 157. Newcomer Kyle McCrite is No. 5 at 125. Division I transfers Bobby Ward (149) and Jordan Johnson (285) are ranked No. 7 and No. 5, respectively, in their classes. Celic Bell was among those mentioned at 197.
Carazo is a two-time All-American and finished third at 174 last season. Bristol also received All-American honors by placing fifth at 157.
“We are leaning on Vic and Teddy to be our team leaders this year. They both have the potential to be national champions. They just have to stay healthy and positive and put together a great senior season.”
In West Region 4, GCU is ranked second behind Nebraska-Kearney. The ‘Lopes have wrestlers ranked in nine of 10 weight classes. McCrite, Carazo and Johnson are ranked No. 1 in their classes. Ward, Bristol and Bell are all ranked second.
“We have some very talented wrestlers joining the lineup this year and we’re excited to see them perform and represent GCU on the mat,” added LaHaye.”
Lino Estrada is No. 3 at 133. Madison Gambrell is No. 5 at 141 and Mike Fucci is No. 5 at 165.
GCU opens the season Nov. 5 at the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner Open. On Nov. 13, the ‘Lopes wrestle closer to home with their annual match with Arizona State, in Tempe. The first home matches will be at the Grand Canyon Duals Dec. 31 in GCU Arena. The remaining home contests will take place at Antelope Gymnasium.
