Grand Canyon’s volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat host Western New Mexico 3-2 in Silver City, N.M. Tuesday.
It was the 10th straight win for the ’Lopes, the longest stretch during coach Kris Naber’s 17-year tenure as head coach. The school-record for consecutive wins is 12, set in 1993.
Junior
Shelby Taylor set a new school mark for block assists in a single match with 12. The previous record was 11, achieved by four players, most recently by senior
Stephanie McBride earlier this month.
GCU (18-6) won by set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 15-11.
The ’Lopes let a third-set 24-20 lead slip away, but quickly regained momentum by leading from start to finish in the fourth and fifth sets.
Junior outside hitter
Janae Giles had 15 kills and a .353 hitting percentage. She had five kills each in the fourth and fifth sets, with just one error in 14 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter
Caelen Hiller had four of her 10 kills in the fifth set. She also had one solo block, four block assists and 18 digs. Senior rightside hitter
Brooke Blomenkamp had 13 kills and eight block assists.
Junior setter
Kristen Preach had 44 assists and 13 digs. Freshman libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 31 digs and sophomore rightside hitter
Megan Davis added 21 digs.
