Grand Canyon and Dixie State go into Saturday’s Pacific West Conference opener with a lot in common.
Both teams are nationally-ranked. Both teams have only one loss. Both teams’ loss came to the same opponent, No. 12 Alaska-Anchorage.
With all that in common, Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. between No. 16 Grand Canyon (12-1) and No. 25 Dixie State (10-1) is expected to be an outstanding contest. Still, it is just one game and 15 more PacWest games will follow.
“It’s easy to look at the rankings, but they could be unranked or 0-13, it’s a conference game, so it’s big,” said GCU coach Trent May. “One team will be 1-0 and one team will be 0-1 and there are 15 games left.
This is the first time two PacWest women’s teams have been ranked at the same time.
GCU has won 11 straight since a Nov. 13 loss to Alaska-Anchorage at the Disney Classic in Anaheim.
Dixie State owns a regular-season win over Division I Utah State, as well as, exhibition victories over D-I foes Southern Utah and Utah Valley.
The teams split last season’s games with the ‘Lopes winning 78-67 in Phoenix on Jan. 30 and losing 93-88 in St. George on Feb. 6. The teams will play in Phoenix this season on Feb. 5.
