A doubly-good week earned Grand Canyon University senior center
Gaby Ngoundjo (Douala, Cameroon, Little Rock Christian, Charlotte) Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for games contested Jan. 24-30. It was announced by the PacWest Media Office late Monday night.
In wins over Chaminade and BYU-Hawai’i, ranked No. 5 and No. 8, respectively, in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings, Ngoundjo tallied double figures in both points and rebounds.
The 6-7 Cameroonian had 12 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-57 victory over Chaminade at Antelope Gymnasium Thursday. Against BYU-Hawai’i in front of a gym-record crowd of 1,905 and a CBS Sports Network national-television audience, Ngoundjo scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds. He was one shy of his career highs in both categories. GCU beat the Seasiders 69-64.
Both Chaminade and BYU-Hawai’i were unbeaten and leading the PacWest prior to their games at GCU. The Antelopes are 5-1 in league play and tied for first with BYU-Hawai’i. GCU is 10-6 overall.
Ngoundjo averaged 13.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and shot 57.9 percent (11-for-19) from the floor in the two victories. For the week, he led the league in rebounding, tied for second in blocked shots, was seventh in shooting and 10th in scoring.
GCU will have another key PacWest home game Saturday when it welcomes Dixie State, ranked No. 10 in the West Region, at 5:15 p.m. The ‘Lopes and Seasiders have a one-game lead over both Dixie State and Chaminade.
The new region rankings will come out Wednesday.
Ngoundjo is the second GCU player to earn Player of the Week honors. Junior point guard
Kyle Speed (Seattle, Wash., Lake Washington, Johnson County CC)was selected the league’s top player Dec. 20.
