GCU to play at U.S. Olympic Training Center

Due to a last minute schedule change, the ‘Lopes will now be playing at 3:00 pm on Friday, Jan. 21 against Park University and 7:00 pm against Johnson & Wales in Denver, Colo. For Saturday night’s match against Johnson & Wales, GCU will be headed for Colorado Springs, Colo. to compete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The match is part of the High Performance Coaches' Clinic for young athletes. Admission is free to public. For more information regarding the match and Olympic Training Center event click here.
The Antelopes had a great start to the season, winning the season opener but have been on a losing streak since. Despite the losses, however, individual players are leading the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) in several statistical categories.
Freshman outside hitter Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium/OLVC) is ranked in four different categories. He is fourth in the conference for kills, averaging 3.18 per set and 70 total for the season. He ranks eighth in service aces with 0.45 per set and 10 total, 10th in digs with 1.73 per set (38 total) and sixth in total points with 3.91 per set and 86 for the season.
Sophomore libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA /Mission Viejo) is second in the conference for digs with 2.89 per set and 55 total so far this season. He is second to Ball State’s Tommy Rouse who is averaging 3.0 digs per set, 39 total.
Freshman outside hitter Ben Hunt (Huntington Beach, CA/Servite) is ranked 14th for kills with 2.41 per set and 53 total. Freshman setter Keith Smith (Whittier, CA, California High School) is ranked seventh for assists, averaging 9.1 per set and has totaled 182 this season.
