Grand Canyon will resume Pacific West Conference play with the first of three straight road games in the San Francisco Bay Area, at Notre Dame de Namur Tuesday.
GCU (6-5, 1-0) is one of four teams yet to lose a conference game. Hawai'i Hilo, Chaminade and BYU-Hawai'i are all 3-0.
Tuesday's opponent, NDNU (3-11, 1-3) was a victim of all three 3-0 teams. The Argonauts went 1-3 on their trip to Hawai'i, but all four games were competitive. They lost to Hilo in double-overtime, BYU-Hawaii by three and Chaminade by seven. The win over Hawai'i Pacific was by two points.
"They're much better than last year and their record is not indicative of the kind of team they have," said GCU coach Russ Pennell.
It will be 10 days between games for the 'Lopes. On Jan. 8, they picked up one of their most satisfying conference wins in recent years with a first-ever road win at Dixie State. Sophomore guard
Steven Morin (Scottsdale, Ariz., Saguaro) hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to lift GCU to a 71-68 victory.
“What you hope is the Dixie win makes our guys even hungrier," said Pennell.
Grand Canyon has won four straight against NDNU, including two at Gleason Gym. The game is the first of three by the Bay. GCU will take on Academy of Art in San Francisco Thursday and Dominican in San Rafael on Saturday.NDNU is located in Belmont.
“Conference road games are always tough," said Grand Canyon junior guard
Nick Witherill (Phoenix, Ariz., Highland, Washington State). "They’re the most intense games and they’re so important to the season.
“We came up here (on our three-game trip) last year and lost, so we’re not going to take anyone lightly. These are all big games."
Tip-off for Tuesday’s contest is 7:30 p.m. PST (8:30 p.m. Arizona Time). Fans can watch the action for a fee on the
