The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team defeated Saint Martin's University, 2-1, in its 2010 season opener tonight at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Antelopes had a 22-4 advantage in shots and completely outplayed the Saints, but the win wasn't secured until senior forward
Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson, Chandler-Gilbert CC) found the back of the net in the 77th minute. Freshman forward
Rebecca Laporte (London, England/Ashmole) flicked the ball over a defender's head, another defender fell down and Poe beat the keeper with her right foot.
Poe, a Second-Team All-PacWest selection last season, has a knack for scoring game-winning goals. She had five of them last year, the second most in a single season in GCU history.
Saint Martin's Gina Cardenas was excellent in goal recording eight saves, six in the first half. GCU freshman
Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic), making her first career start for the 'Lopes, recorded only one save but she, too, played solidly.
GCU got on the scoreboard first when heralded sophomore midfielder/forward
Marine Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun) drilled a penalty kick past Cardenas in the 31st minute. It was Nesic's first official goal for Nesic, who missed the past two seasons, last year due to a knee injury.
The Saints tied the game in the 41st minute when Jill Webb took a feed from Julianna Sackeyfio, changed direction and made a great finish.
Two of the four shots Poe took in the game were on goal, as were four of Nesic's eight and three of Laporte's five.
The 'Lopes' next game is against Cal State San Bernardino (0-0-0) at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the GCU Soccer Field. GCU finished 9-9-2 overall, 6-6-2 in the Pacific West Conference last season and were ranked No. 8 in the West Region -- a first for the women's soccer program.
