Due to concerns over extreme heat, the annual softball game between Grand Canyon University’s baseball team and its friends from the Arizona Recreation Center for the Handicapped, originally scheduled for Wednesday at Brazell Stadium, has been postponed to Oct. 13.
The fun-filled ballgame between GCU and ARCH is in its seventh year.
Though pushed back two weeks, the plans remain the same for the event. The yearly contest between the friendly rivals will get underway at 1 p.m.
Prior to the game, GCU students and guests can get a free ballpark lunch of hot dogs, chips, soda and Italian ice, courtesy of Sodexo.
ARCH is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping handicapped individuals reach and maintain a high level of fitness, dignity and self-worth.
“We like to be there for them,” said GCU senior Joe Jacobson, a veteran of the event. “A lot of them remember us and we remember them.
“It’s awesome (to have an event like this) and it gives me a good feeling to be a part of this tradition. We always look forward to playing them and having fun.”
Each year, the baseball program plays a big part in giving back to the community. Along with the GCU-ARCH game, annual events include trips to the Arizona Veterans Home and the Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
