With 15 home games, road contests (both exhibition and regular season) against Division I opponents and the 16-game Pacific West Conference schedule, the 2010-11 Grand Canyon University Men's Basketball schedule, released Wednesday, provides a variety of challenges.
"I think we have a great balance to our schedule," said second-year head coach Russ Pennell. "We play some high-end D-I teams early in the season, play some really high-end D-II teams (in the pre-PacWest portion) and then there's the always competitive PacWest."
GCU opens the preseason with exhibition games against two 2010 NCAA Division I tournament teams. On Nov. 2, the team travels to one of the nation's storied programs in UNLV. Three days later, the 'Lopes travel to Utah State, regular-season champs of the Western Athletic Conference three years running.
The regular season opens Nov. 12 in Salt Lake City at tradition-rich Utah.
GCU will host three invitationals, which include games against Final 4 participant St. Cloud State on Nov. 20 and another NCAA tournament team in Seattle Pacific on Nov. 27.
GCU will also travel to Seattle Pacific (Dec. 4) and along with playing the hosts, take on another 2010 tournament team in Central Washington (Dec. 3).
The first of 15 home games at Antelope Gym is Nov. 19 against Minnesota-Duluth.
"The most exciting thing about the schedule is that it gives us a chance to play some more home games and hopefully develop a homecourt advantage," added Pennell. "I hope that people will come out and get a chance to see a high level of basketball they may not have known about.
"The level of play at Division II is very high and very entertaining."
The conference season begins Jan. 8 at Dixie State, one of two PacWest teams (BYU-Hawai'i) that advanced to the national tournament.
The conference home opener is Jan. 27 against Chaminade.
Winning its final six games and 10 of the last 13, Grand Canyon finished the 2009-10 campaign as one of the PacWest's hottest teams. The 'Lopes return eight players, including six of their top seven scorers.
