For the second consecutive day, the No. 25-ranked Grand Canyon University softball team split a doubleheader with Pacific West Conference rival Academy of Art today at Stapleton-Pierson Field. The Antelopes won the first game, 3-2, but lost the second, 9-7.
GCU now is 33-8 overall, 14-6 in the PacWest. Academy of Art is 20-18-1, 10-10.
In Game 1, solo home runs by junior left fielder Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway) and junior first baseman Michelle Rasmussen (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge) accounted for two of the 'Lopes' runs. Rasmussen had two of GCU's seven hits in the game.
Sophomore Ivy Campus (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) pitched seven innings and allowed eight hits and two runs (both earned), walked two and had four strikeouts. She is 19-4 on the season.
Freshman Kimberly Dauer started for the Urban Knights and surrendered two hits and two runs (both earned) in 1 2/3 innings. She was replaced by sophomore Sierrah Garcia, who pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up five hits and one run (it was earned), walked none and had four strikeouts.
Garcia started Game 2 for Academy of Art and pitched all seven innings. She allowed 11 hits and seven runs (five of which were earned), walked one and recorded six strikeouts. She got the win after junior infielder Alana Aweau crushed a grand-slam home run to right field with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Urban Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead, but GCU scored two in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the seventh (Academy of Art scored one run in the bottom of the fifth) to lead, 7-5.
Junior Kat Hulet (Mesa, AZ/Dobson) started for the 'Lopes and pitched three innings. She gave up five hits and four runs (only one of which was earned), walked one and did not have any strikeouts. Senior Amy Searcy (Bixby, OK/Bixby) took over for her in the bottom of the fourth and went the rest of the way, allowing four hits and five runs (all of them earned), walked one and striking out one.
Senior right fielder Nicki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon) went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Sophomore shortstop Kaycee Gamez (Eugene, OR/Sheldon) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Barry, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base and three runs scored. Senior second baseman Kelli Bridges (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) had two RBIs (both on sacrifice flies) and one run scored. Junior designated player Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
GCU travels next weekend to St. George, Utah, where it has doubleheaders against Dixie State (21-10, 10-4) at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
