SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- The Grand Canyon University softball team, ranked No. 21 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region, swept a doubleheader over Dominican University of California today at McInnis Park. The Antelopes won the first game 16-0 in five innings and the nightcap 2-1 in seven.
GCU, which already had broken the school record of 39 wins set in 2009, finished the regular season 42-11 overall, 23-9 in the Pacific West Conference. The Penguins, in their first season at the Division-II level after moving up from the NAIA California Pacific Conference, ended up 2-32, 2-27.
In the first game, the 'Lopes put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when freshman left fielder
Samantha Wyatt (Glendale, AZ/Independence HS) had a bunt single, Gamez walked, Wyatt advanced to third on a passed ball and Barry hit her league-leading 14th home run of the season.
GCU tallied two more runs in the bottom of the second. Campas walked. Lorenzi reached on an error by the second baseman and advanced to second on the throw, and Campas scored. Lorenzi stole third and scored on Gamez's single through the right side. Lorenzi's stolen base was her 25th of the season, breaking the school record of 24 set by Strohm Fouty in 2008.
The 'Lopes plated nine more runs in the bottom of the third. Senior second baseman
Kelli Bridges (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City HS, North Idaho College) and senior designated player
Tracy Lubken (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon HS, Phoenix College) tripled to center, driving in Bridges. Lubken scored on a passed ball. Campas walked and stole second. Lorenzi walked. Campas advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on Wyatt's single to center. Gamez singled up the middle, driving in Lorenzi, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Barry walked. Bridges singled up the middle, scoring Wyatt and Gamez. Barry stole third. Lubken hit her second triple of the inning, this time to left-center, driving in Barry and Bridges. Lucas singled through the left side, scoring Lubken.
GCU notched its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Lorenzi singled to left, junior first baseman/outfielder
Michelle Rasmussen (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge HS. Arizona Western CC) singled to left-center and Barry walked. Bridges singled to right-center, driving in Lorenzi and Rasmussen.
Campas gave up only one hit, a single, and won her school record 22nd game of the season. The previous mark of 15 was established by Jessica Palma last year. Campas walked three and had four strikeouts to raise her season total to 101, the second most in school history.
In the second game, the 'Lopes scored one run in the bottom of the third inning when junior pitcher
Kat Hulet (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS, Chandler-Gilbert CC) walked, senior right fielder
Nikki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon HS, Gateway CC) singled up the middle, sophomore shortstop
Kaycee Gamez (Eugene, OR/Sheldon HS) walked and junior left fielder
Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway HS, Phoenix College) walked, driving in Hulet. It was Barry's PacWest-leading 57th RBI of the season.
GCU scored again in the bottom of the sixth on a home run to right-center by junior first baseman
Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus HS, Phoenix College), her fifth of the season, after Dominican pushed a run across the plate in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 1.
Hulet pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed five hits -- only one through the first five innings -- and one run (it was earned), did not issue any bases on balls and recorded one strikeout. Sophomore
Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS, Phoenix College) got the save, her first of the season. Hulet raised her season record to 5-0.
It was the 28th appearance of the season for Campas, tied for the third most in school history. She pitched 164 1/3 innings this season, the fourth most in school history.
