Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside, Phoenix College) allowed no earned runs, but Grand Canyon University lost its opener in the NCAA Division II Softball West Regional to Chico State University, 5-4, today at Seawolf Field on the campus of Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif.
Senior second baseman Charlotte Honciano reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth inning. One out later, sophomore center fielder Sam Quadt singled to right field, driving in Honciano with what proved to be the winning run.

No. 15 GCU fell to 42-12 on the season, while Chico State, a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Conference and the No. 6 seed in the West region, improved to 30-19.

The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the third inning when Quadt singled to center, junior shortstop Courtney Brock reached on an error by Nisbet and sophomore catcher Jenna Wermes hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped by Holtorf. Quadt scored on the play. Senior third baseman Becca Johnson singled to center, driving in Brock and Wermes, and sophomore first baseman Rachel Failla also singled to center, scoring Johnson.
GCU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Lucas tripled off the right-field wall with one out and Campas reached on an error by Johnson. She was pinch run for by freshman outfielder Samantha Wyatt (Glendale, AZ/Independence). Nisbet reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases. Lorenzi singled to center, driving in Lucas.
Freshman pitcher Kacie McCarthy struck out a career-high 11 batter in seven and one-third innings of relief for Chico State.
Campas (23-6) pitched all eight innings and gave up eight hits and four walks while striking out one.
The 'Lopes will play the loser of today's game between host Sonoma State, the No. 2 seed, and No. 7 seed Dixie State at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. If they win that game, they will play again at 4 p.m. against the winner of the 11 a.m. game between Chico State and the winner of today's second game.
This is a double-elimination tournament, so GCU has to win both games tomorrow to advance to Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7 on Sunday.
