Courtland hits, pitches GCU to win
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Grand Canyon split its doubleheader against Dixie State College at Bruce Hurst Field Saturday.
GCU (27-23, 17-15) lost first game 8-5 and won the second 11-7 and will finish third in the Pacific West Conference. GCU finishes its season with games at CSU San Bernardino Thursday and Friday.
In the Game 2 win, GCU senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park,AZ, Millennium (Iowa Wesleyan)) earned his fifth win of the season, extended his hitting streak to eight games, while going 3-of-4 with three RBIs.
Courtland fanned eight, a season-best for GCU pitching.
Infielder Gavin Tucker (Gilbert, AZ, Gilbert (Phoenix CC) hit his first collegiate homer in the win, while junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado) and freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon) each had home runs.
Bair, had an RBI-double to score senior third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon (Glendale CC), who had a one-out single to start the Antelope scoring in the first. Bair's homer tied the game, 2-2, in the third and his single in the fourth gave GCU a 3-2 lead. Courtland drove in a run with a single in the fourth for a 4-2 'Lope advantage. Tucker, who had walked and Green, who had singled, scored the runs.
After Dixie tied the game, 4-4, Canyon had a five-run fifth.
Bethea opened the fifth with a home run. Senior outfielder Billy Schroeder (Muskego,WI, Muskego (Indian Hills JC)) was hit by a pitch. Tucker followed with a single. Schroeder scored on a single from sophomore shortstop PJ Garcia (Phoenix, AZ, Thunderbird). Green reached on an error and another run came across, then Courtland aided his cause with a two-run double.
Tucker hit a two-run homer in the sixth, following a Schroeder walk and stolen base.
In the opener, Courtland gave the 'Lopes a 1-0 lead in the first. He followed a Garcia single and Green sacrifice bunt with a single. In the second, GCU scored after freshman outfielder Trevor Santor (Glendale, AZ, Ironwood) was hit by pitch, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw. Schroeder doubled to score Santor.
Canyon cut Dixie's lead to 5-3 in the fourth on a pinch-hit home run by senior John Stanko (Mesa, AZ, Desert Ridge (Wayland Baptist)).
GCU finished its scoring with two in the fifth for the game's final runs. Bair walked, Courtland singled and Bethea followed with a two-out RBI-single. Santor drove in Courtland with a double.
