SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --
Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park,AZ, Millennium (Iowa Wesleyan)) broke a 3-3 tie with his ninth home run of the season to help propel Grand Canyon to a 5-3 win over No. 20 CSU San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field Thursday.
The win improved the Antelopes record to 28-23, while the Coyotes, ranked No. 4 in the West Region and 20th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, dropped to 28-15.
Courtland homered to center field to start the sixth inning. GCU added another run after
Joe Jacobson (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado) reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrfice bunt from
Danny Bethea (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon), to third on a
Trevor Santor (Glendale, AZ, Ironwood) ground out and scored on a single from
Billy Schroeder (Muskego,WI, Muskego (Indian Hills JC)).
The homer was Courtland's lone hit in five at-bats and extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Grand Canyon opened with three first-inning runs.
PJ Garcia (Phoenix, AZ, Thunderbird) singled up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jay Green (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon (Glendale CC) and scored on a double by
Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado). It was Bair's 21st double of the season, the most from a Canyon player since Trevor Kaats hit 21 in 2004. A Jacobson two-out single scored Bair. After a balk and Bethea single, Jacobson scored for a 3-0 lead.
CSUSB tied the game with three runs in the fourth.
In relief of starter
Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon (Arizona State), freshman
Cody Repenning (Gilbert, AZ, Gilbert) earned the win in relief. He threw four and one-third innings, struck out five and gave up only two hits.
Garcia had three hits, while Green and Bethea each had two.
The teams meet again Friday at 2 p.m. It is the season finale for GCU.
