ST. GEORGE, Utah – Grand Canyon (26-22, 16-14) lost two Pacific West Conference games to Dixie State at Bruce Hurst Field Friday.
The teams meet again Saturday for a pair of games beginning at noon. GCU dropped the opener 8-3 and the nightcap 6-1.
Sophomore shortstop PJ Garcia (Phoenix, AZ, Thunderbird) accounted for the lone run in the second game with his first home run of the season. He had two singles and two RBIs in the opener.
Senior designated hitter Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park,AZ, Millennium (Iowa Wesleyan)) extended his hitting streak to six games.
In the opener, GCU took a 1-0 lead after one-half inning. Garcia opened with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jay Green (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon (Glendale CC). With two outs, Courtland's single to right-center scored Garcia.
Trailing 3-1, GCU tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth. With one out, freshman outfielder Trevor Santor (Glendale, AZ, Ironwood) singled and moved to second on a walk to freshman second baseman Mike Kenneth (Chandler, AZ, Marcos de Niza). An errant pick-off throw moved each runner up a base and both scored on Garcia's single to right-center.
Garcia, junior first baseman Joe Jacobson (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado) and Kenneth each had two hits. Kenneth had a double.
In game two, Garcia's solo home run came in the third inning. Junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado) hit his team-best 19th double of the season.
