The Grand Canyon University softball team, which averages more hits and runs than any other team in the Pacific West Conference, managed just 14 hits and seven runs in a PacWest doubleheader split with Academy of Art today at Stapleton-Pierson Field. The Antelopes won the first game, 6-2, but lost the second, 3-1.
GCU is 32-7 overall, 13-5 in the PacWest. Academy of Art is 19-17-1, 9-9.
In the first game, the 'Lopes scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, three in the fourth and two in the sixth. Senior right fielder Nicki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon) had three of GCU's 10 hits, one of which was a double, as well as one run scored. Sophomore shortstop Kaycee Gamez (Eugene, OR/Sheldon) went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. She also was hit by a pitch.
Senior third baseman Gayle Nisbet (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain) was 2-for-3 with a double, stolen base, four RBIs and one run scored.
Sophomore Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits and two runs (both earned), walked three and struck out five. She also scored a run in the game. Her season record is 18-4.
In the second game, senior Amy Searcy (Bixby, OK/Bixby) got back on the hill after being hit in the head last week. Her head was wrapped to protect her stitches, and she wore a facemask. She struggled a little in the first inning, issuing two walks and giving up a three-run home run by senior shortstop Shampayne Clay, her fifth of the season.
Searcy allowed just three hits the remainder of the game. She had five strikeouts.
GCU and Academy of Art play another doubleheader tomorrow at Stapleton=Pierson Field. The first game starts at 10 a.m.
