Sophomore pitcher Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) allowed just five hits and two runs in seven innings as the Grand Canyon University softball team beat San Francisco State, 4-2, today in its third game in the Stanislaus Tournament in Turlock, Calif.
It was the fourth time the Antelopes have defeated the Gators in the past week. GCU swept a three-game series from San Francisco State last Sunday and Monday in Phoenix.
The No. 10-ranked 'Lopes improved to 27-5, while the Gators fell to 12-15.
San Francisco State got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when third baseman Lea Cardenas doubled to right field and right fielder Alyssa Esquibel singled through te right side, driving in Cardenas.
GCU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when junior third baseman Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) doubled to right-center; senior right fielder Nicki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon) grounded out to second, advancing Lucas to third; sophomore center fielder Kara Holtorf (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second; and senior designated player Tracy Lubken (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) singled to right field, scoring Lucas and Holtorf.
The 'Lopes tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth. Lubken walked, and junior left fielder Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway) singled through the right side. Senior second baseman Kelli Bridges (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners. Junior first baseman Michelle Rasmussen (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge) singled to center field, driving in Lubken, and Barry also scored on the play on an error by center fielder Heather Jensen.
Cardenas hit a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the seventh for the Gators' final run.
Campas (14-3) did not walk anyone and had three strikeouts.
Holtorf went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Lubken was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.
GCU plays two more games in the Stanislaus Tournament tomorrow, against Chico State (15-11) at 9 a.m. and against Humboldt State (13-17) at 1:30 p.m. The 'Lopes also will have tournament bracket play on Sunday.
