Chico State scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie and defeat Grand Canyon University, 1-0, today in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions at Turlock, Calif.
It was the fourth game in the three-day tournament for the No. 10-ranked 'Lopes. They won two of three games yesterday, and play once more today. Their season record now stands at 27-6. The Wildcats are 16-11.
Chico State first baseman Rachel Failla led off the bottom of the seventh by singling down the left-field line. Jessie Minch pinch ran for her and advanced to second when catcher Jenna Wermes laid down a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on an error by sophomore pitcher Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) on the play. Designated player Christina Wieck walked, advancing Wermes to second. Right fielder Kelly Head was hit by a pitch, driving in the winning run.
GCU had just four hits in the game against Jessica McDermott (7-2), who walked three and struck out eight. Campas (14-4) also pitched well, giving up four hits and the one run, which was unearned, walking two and striking out three.
Two of the 'Lopes' hits, by senior right fielder Nicki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon) and sophomore shortstop Kaycee Gamez (Eugene, OR/Sheldon), were doubles. The others were singles by sophomore center fielder Kara Holtorf (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) and junior first baseman Michelle Rasmussen (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge).
Gamez also had a sacrifice, and junior left fielder Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway) had a stolen base.
GCU faces Humboldt State (13-17) at 1:30 p.m. today.
