Redshirt sophomore Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College), ranked No. 5 at 165 pounds, and junior Ryan Becerra (Gilbert, AZ/Cal State Bakersfield), unranked at 184 pounds, became Grand Canyon University's first wrestling All-Americans today at the 48th annual NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Neb.
Carazo won a 5-4 decision over No. 4-ranked Tad Merritt of St. Cloud State (26-6) in the second round. He pinned Bret Terry of Gannon University (21-19) at 0:45 to win his first-round match. Carazo (37-4) will compete in the semifinals tomorrow.
Becerra (20-10) upset the No. 1-ranked seed from the Midwest Region, No. 3 Lucas Haag of Wisconsin-Parkside (43-11), 6-2. He then was pinned by No. 7 Bryant Blanton of Newberry (40-7) at 5:53 before moving to the consolation round, where he defeated Chris Draper-Johnson of Southwest Minnesota State University (18-17), 5-2.
GCU junior Todd Wilcox (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), ranked No. 6 at 133 pounds, lost a tough second-round match in triple overtime to No. 1-ranked Shane Valko of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (25-1). Wilcox (38-5) won a 6-4 decision over Blake Fisher of Newman University (18-10) in the opening round. He moved into the consolation round, where he again lost in triple overtime, this time to Sheridan Moran of Newberry College (28-12), 6-5.
Senior Stephen Towne (Phoenix, AZ/Menlo College), at 157 pounds, is the only Antelope who did not advance beyond the first round. Towne (32-9) lost to No. 4-ranked George Ivanov of Nebraska-Omaha (35-10).
GCU's third-year program, under Head Coach R.C. LaHaye, was ranked No. 18 in the final NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll of the season released last week.
Nebraska-Omaha is the overwhelming favorite to capture its second straight NCAA Division II national championship. The Mavericks were the unanimous No. 1 pick in the final poll. They have been No. 1 in 15 straight polls the past two years, having topped the rankings in every poll in 2008-09 and again this season.
Details about all of the 'Lopes' matches at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will be posted as quickly as possible on gculopes.com. Live streaming video of the tournament, which is being held at Sapp Fieldhouse on the University of Nebraska-Omaha campus, is available at ncaa.com.
