ALAMOSA, Colo. -- It's almost as if the Antelopes are starting anew. They begin the new year at the break-even point, and that's a good thing.
Grand Canyon beat Adams State 76-64 Tuesday night for the Lopes first road win of the season. It moved GCU's record to 5-5. It will take that momentum into Pacific West Conference play Friday and Saturday at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif.
Dave Cuen scored 26 points, had three steals and four rebounds before fouling out in a breakout game for the junior forward. Cuen's 26 points were a season-high for all Antelopes players this year. He hit on 11 of 16 field goals in 26 minutes.
The win was GCU's third in four games. Adams State fell to 2-9, suffering its eighth straight loss.
Grand Canyon shot 60.9 percent in the first half to build a 39-17 lead that the Lopes tucked away to send them out off 2008 as winners.
Shansan Chambers had nine points, and Eric Cuen added seven points and seven boards for the Lopes. Milee Karre, Brandon McGruder and Engen Nurumbi each had eight points. Dane Hill (pictured, ASC Sports Information's Kyle Zarn) had five assists.
Adams State's Seth Heinbauch scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Seth Amos had 11 points, and Nate Ingbretson added 10 points and four assists.
GCU hit five of six three-pointers in the first half, and sank 11 of 14 second half free throws. The Antelopes held the Grizzlies to 1 of 8 triples in the first half in which ASC shot just 25.9 percent from the field.
