Dave Cuen insists he knows about this program. He also insists his mates will be ready come Saturday.
"This is a prestigious program," said Cuen (pictured). "Putting on the Grand Canyon uniform, I have a lot of pride in that and I know the rest of the team does as well. We're all here to win."
Not in a while has pride meant so much to Grand Canyon University men's basketball program. This weekend Purple Pride is at stake.
Grand Canyon hosts Cal State Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the first time with the purple seats courtside. That's a comforting thought.
"Yeah, I'm looking forward to not eating fast food and getting some rest," head coach Dan Nichols said. "It seems like we've been on the road forever."
Antelope Gym has become the Antelopes' ultimate elixir over the last three years. Grand Canyon, seeking its first win this season, is 31-9 at home during that stretch. They went 9-4 at home a year ago, following back-to-back 11-win home seasons.
GCU will play its next five games in Antelope Gym.
"It's always good knowing you have a little stint at home, and having the home crowd behind you," said Cuen, who enters the game averaging 18 points and 6.5 rebounds and leads the team with five steals. "We're real excited to play at home."
Cal State Los Angeles will lace it up for the first time this season in a game that matters. The Eagles have shifted from the East Coast to the West Coast in the preseason, matching up against three NCAA Division I schools to prepare for a game that counts.
"I know they're one of the better D2 teams in the nation," Nichols said. "I know we got to step up and play them tough."
GCU entered this season preaching defensive philosophies. So far the Antelopes have been outscored an average of 86.5 to 65. That's not what the new doctor ordered. Cal State LA averaged 76.3 points per game in 2007-08.
"I know they're gonna bring an up-tempo game," Cuen said. "They also have to adapt to our game."
