The Grand Canyon University softball team improved its season record to 12-1 today by winning two non-conference games over Western New Mexico University, including one in which it scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and one in the eighth. The Antelopes beat the Mustangs, 8-5 and 5-4, and play them again at noon tomorrow in the final game of this three-game series at Stapleton-Pierson Field.
In the first game, GCU scored six runs in the second inning to give themselves a cushion and held on as Western New Mexico scored all five of its runs in the final five innings, including two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Senior second baseman Kelli Bridges (Couer d'Alene, ID/Lake City), the reigning Pacific West Conference Player of the Week, went 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored to lead the offensive attack. Other key contributions came from senior right fielder Nikki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon), who was 1-for-4 with two RBI, senior designated player Tracy Lubken (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon), who went 2-for-3 wit two runs scored, and senior Amy Searcy (Bixby, OK/Bixby), who pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits, five runs (three of which were earned), walked one and had five strikeouts. Searcy's season record now is 6-1.
In Game Two, the 'Lopes surrendered two runs on the first inning and two more in the fifth, but scored two runs of their own in the fifth and tied the game with two more in the bottom of the seventh. They won the game in the first extra inning.
Lubken went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, walked twice and hit her second home run of the season. Bridges was 2-for-5 with one run scored, junior left fielder Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway) went 2-for-3 and walked twice, senior third baseman Gayle Nisbet (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain) was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Lorenzi went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Sophomore Amy Searcy (Tucson, AZ.Sunnyside), the current PacWest Pitcher of the Week, pitched eight innings and gave up seven hits and four runs (two of them wer earned), walked two and recorded five strikeouts. She raised her season record to 6-0.
