Santor single wins Game 2 in last at-bat
A night at Brazell Stadium doesn't lack for excitement.
For the third time in five games, Grand Canyon's baseball team earned a victory in its final at-bat.
Freshman Trevor Santor (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) hit a single through a drawn-in infield to give the 'Lopes a 12-11 win over Montana State-Billings in the second game of a doubleheader sweep Thursday at the stadium.
GCU (10-6) won the opener 7-1, finishing a four-game sweep of the Yellowjackets and extending its overall winning streak to five games. The 'Lopes leave Saturday for a nine-game road trip in Hawai'i, eight of the games are Pacific West Conference contests. GCU will play doubleheaders Sunday and Monday at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo and a nine-inning non-conference game against the Vulcans Tuesday before heading to Hawai'i Pacific for a four-game league series.
"We're finding ways to win games and that's the game of baseball," said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton. "I've always been told that good teams find ways to win games and I look at that as a plus for us."
Grand Canyon won the opening game of its series against Billings Wednesday when senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) hit a two-run walk-off home run to give GCU a 4-2 victory.
Junior Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) hit a walk-off double to defeat Dixie State 6-5 Saturday to give the 'Lopes a win in their opening PacWest series of the season.
In Thursday's second game, GCU drew 13 walks and two batters were hit by pitch. Freshman Brady Wager (Globe, Ariz./Globe) earned the win in relief, but got plenty of bullpen help from the contingent of Cody Repenning (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert), Justin McKee (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) and William Armijo (Gallup, N.M./Paradise Valley).
The trio that preceded Wager threw four innings and gave up just one run, aiding the 'Lopes comeback from a 7-2 deficit.
In the opener, Courtland threw six strong innings to get the win, his first of the season. He scattered seven hits, struck out two and didn't walk anyone.
In his first start of the season, sophomore second baseman Gavin Tucker (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) had two hits, two runs scored, a stolen base and two RBIs.
Again, GCU took advantage of a struggling Yellowjacket pitching staff. In a three-run second inning, the 'Lopes scored -- after a Tucker single -- on consecutive walks to Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon), Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/New Mexico) and P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) followed by back-to-back hit batsmen to Courtland and Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado).
