Tyler Bair played a big factor in splitting Monday's doubleheader at Hilo. Bair scored the game's first run, drove in GCU's second and added another RBI in a five-run fourth inning.

'Lopes get split after tough Game 1 loss

HILO, Hawai'i - Grand Canyon had won three of its last five games on its last at-bat, on Monday in a Pacific West Conference game against University of Hawai'i at Hilo, the 'Lopes found out what it was like to be on the other end.
With two outs in the seventh inning, Hilo scored for a 4-3 win in the completion of Sunday's suspended game. GCU (11-7, 4-2) was able to earn a split with a 7-2 victory in the second contest.
GCU senior John Stanko (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge/Wayland Baptist) hit a two-run pinch-hit home run in the top of the seventh to wrap up a three-run frame and tie the game 3-3.
The 'Lopes were without ace Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/ASU/UNLV), who threw two-thirds of an inning Sunday before the game was halted due to rain.
Lefty Justin McKee (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado/McCook CC) threw five and two-thirds innings of solid relief, fanning seven with no walks. He gave up only two earned runs.
In the second game, junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) scored the team's first run and drove in the second. With the 'Lopes up 2-1, they added five more in the fourth. Bair had an RBI-single in the fram and sophomore shortstop P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) had a two-run double.
Senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) picked up the win to improve to 2-2. He struck out six and gave up four hits. WIlliam Armijo (Gallup, N.M./Paradise Valley) threw two scoreless innings of relief.
The teams meet again Tuesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
