Canyon takes 19-4 victory in nightcap
For the second straight time, Grand Canyon had a walk-off hit to win a game.
Senior Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Canyon a 4-2 victory over Montana State-Billings in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Brazell Stadium.
GCU won the nightcap 19-4, its third straight win.
In the seventh inning of game one, senior Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/New Mexico) drew a one-out walk. Sophomore P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) reached on a fielder's choice and Courtland followed with his two-out homer.
GCU had tied the game, 1-1, in the fifth inning on a homer from sophomore Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon). It was the second time this week Bristyan, a 5-foot, 8-inch 150-pounder, had tied a game late with a homer. He did not have a home run as a freshman.
In game one of the Dixie State series, Bristyan hit his first collegiate long ball with two outs in the sixth inning, breaking up the Red Storm no-hitter and giving the 'Lopes momentum for a 4-2 win.
Again, against the Yellowjackets, Bristyan gave GCU its first run. MSUB took a 2-1 lead before the 'Lopes tied it again in hte sixth.
Junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) and to third on a ground out by freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon). A base hit from senior Billy Schroeder (Muskego, Wisc./Muskego) scored Bair to tie the game.
Freshman reliever Cody Repenning (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) earned his first college win. Starter Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/Arizona St./UNLV) threw the first five innings and struck out four and only gave up two hits.
Grand Canyon (8-6) was never challenged in the second game. The Antelopes scored seven in the first and six more in the second.
Eleven different players had hits and 13 different players scored runs. Bair had two doubles. Reliever Jon Weaver (Castle Rock, Colo./Regis Jesuit/Scottsdale CC) earned his first GCU win.
"Anytime you leave the ballpark with two wins, it's a good day," said GCU coach Dave Stapleton. "When you win a few games like we did against Dixie, they all start figuring out how to win games, but we can't wait around like that and we did that in the first game. We took care of business in the second game."
The two teams meet again Thursday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
