Jacobson walk-off double in 7th decides it
Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) hit two home runs and Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) doubled off the left field wall to score Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/New Mexico) with the game-winning run for a Grand Canyon 6-5 win over Dixie State at Brazell Stadium Saturday to give the 'Lopes a doubleheader split and series win over the Pacific West Conference favorites.
GCU lost the first game 7-3, but won the initial PacWest series of the season 3-1 over the defending champion Red Storm.
In game two, Courtland, who also started on the mound, hit a 3-run first-inning homer and a solo shot in the third to give GCU a 5-2 lead. After a 57-minute rain delay, Dixie State came back to tie the game, 5-5. In the seventh inning, Green led off with a walk. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird). Dixie State elected to walk Courtland. Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) fanned and, with two outs, junior Jacobson, on a one-ball, two-strike count, ended the game with his third double of the season.
Freshman Brady Wager (Globe, Ariz./Globe) threw three innings of relief to earn his first collegiate win. He got his first save Friday.
Courtland went 3-for-3 at the plate. Jacobson was 2-for-4. Freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) had an RBI-single in GCU's four-run first inning.
In game one, GCU was hurt by hitting into three double plays. Senior Mark Hardy (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork) threw well in relief, going five and two-thirds innings and giving up just one earned run.
Garcia had an RBI-single and sacrifice fly. Green drove in a run with a single. Sophomore Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) scored two of GCU's three runs.
"It was a good weekend for us," said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton. "Anytime you win three of four against a team like Dixie that won the league last year (it's a good weekend). They have a good club and (Dixie coach Mike Littlewood) always has his team ready to play."
