Bristyan blast ignites 'Lopes
Grand Canyon opened the Pacific West Conference portion of its season with a doubleheader sweep of PWC favorite Dixie State at Brazell Stadium Friday.
The 'Lopes picked up wins by scores of 4-1 and 4-2. The teams meet again Saturday for a doubleheader at Brazell Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) broke up Dixie pitcher Preston Grimes' no-hitter, shutout and lead with a two-out sixth-inning solo homer, the first of his GCU career, to tie the game, 1-1. It started a four-run frame. Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) added an RBI-single and sophomore designated hitter Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) added a two-run single.
Senior lefty Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/ASU/UNLV) wrapped the game up in the seventh to earn his first win of the season.
Threw five and two-thirds innings, Grimes had faced only one over the minimum, but Bristyan's homer was followed by a walk to Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/New Mexico), single by P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) and walk to Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) Bair and Jacobson followed with their RBI hits.
Urlaub has pitched well in all three of his starts, but Friday was the first time he was credited with a win. He went the distance, scattered eight hits, did not walk a batter and fanned five. He dropped his earned run average to 2.75 and threw the 'Lopes first complete game of the season.
In game two, GCU got its runs early, four in the second.
WIth one out, Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon), Billy Schroeder (Muskego, WI/Muskego) and Mike Kenneth (Chandler, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) hit consecutive singles.
Bristyan followed with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Green added an RBI-single and Garcia drove in two with a double.
Garcia upped his team-best batting average and RBI total to .448 and 11, respectively.
Danny Skelly (Elmwood Park, Ill./St. Joseph's/ASU) threw four innings to earn the win. Freshmen Cody Repenning (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) and Brady Wager (Globe, Ariz./Globe) were brilliant in relief.
Repenning threw two and two-thirds innings and fanned five. Wager came in with two runners on and Dixie slugger Drew Oldfield at the plate and got Oldfield, after numerous foul balls, to ground out to second to end the game.
"It's a good start," said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton of the doubleheader sweep, not getting overly excited noting his club has two more with the Red Storm on Saturday. "(Joey's home run) got us on the right track and that's what it takes in these kind of games.
"All of a sudden we realized, Dixie is a great club but, we can play with them and our nerves settled down."
