The No. 20-ranked Grand Canyon University wrestling team lost tough duals tonight to No. 14 Fort Hays State University and No. 7 University of Nebraska-Kearney at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kan. As a result, the Antelopes finished third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season standings.
The three teams were competing in their final two duals of the 2009-10 season.
Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney both entered the event with 7-0 records in the RMAC. GCU was 6-1. The Lopers defeated the Antelopes at 3 p.m. and the Tigers beat the ‘Lopes at 5 p.m., setting up a battle for the conference dual title outright between rivals Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney for the RMAC championship. The Lopers won, 26-9, thus denying the Tigers their first ever conference dual title in wrestling.
Tonight’s duals featured at least one nationally-ranked wrestler in eight of the 10 weight classes: Tommy Edgmon (FHSU), No. 3, 125 pounds; Todd Wilcox (GCU), No. 6, 133 pounds; Andre Harrison (FHSU), No. 2, 141 pounds; T.J. Hepburn (UNK), No. 4, 149 pounds; Danny Grater (FHSU), No. 4, 157 pounds; Victor Carazo (GCU), No. 6 and Blake Milloy (FHSU), No. 7, 165 pounds; Marty Usman (UNK), No. 1, 174 pounds; and Chance Rencoutre (FHSU), No. 5, 184 pounds.
Only the 197- and 285-pound weight classes did not include a wrestler ranked in the top eight nationally.
Wilcox (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), a junior, and Carazo (Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College), a redshirt sophomore, both won both of their matches tonight. Wilcox’s season record now stands at 35-2, and Carazo is 32-4.
Four regional tournaments will be held around the country the weekend of Feb. 27-28 to determine the 160 individual qualifiers for the 2010 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, which are set for March 12-13 in Omaha, Neb.
