LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Grand Canyon dropped a doubleheader to No. 3 UC San Diego at Triton Ballpark Friday. The teams play another twinbill Saturday starting at noon Phoenix time.
Canyon (3-3) lost the opener 6-0 and the second game 16-2.
GCU senior starter
Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/ASU/UNLV) pitched well in the opener giving up just one earned run in six and one-third innings. He scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out two.
UCSD ace Tim Shibuya threw seven shutout innings and fanned eight, while giving up just three hits.
GCU junior right fielder
Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) got the 'Lopes first hit with a two-out single in the third. Senior first baseman
John Stanko (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge/Wayland Baptist) had two singles.
In the eighth inning, the 'Lopes had their best scoring opportunity. Freshman catcher
Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) had a one-out single. Bair drew a two-out walk and sophomore center fielder
Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) was hit by a pitch, but all three were left stranded.
In game two, GCU led 2-1 in the third.
Bair walked and Bristyan reached on a sac bunt attempt. An errant throw on the play allowed Bair to come all the way around to score, while Bristyan moved to third. He scored on a single to center field by senior third baseman
Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/Scottsdale C.C./New Mexico).
