Team hits .397 in four-game set

Grand Canyon batted around twice in a 15-3 victory over Regis Sunday. It was the series clinching win and gave the 'Lopes a 3-1 record to start the season.

"It was important for us to win the series," said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton, whose club will head to No. 3 UC San Diego for a four-game series next weekend. "We showed some different things this weekend. We came to the ballpark with some energy and we executed."

Trailing 2-1 in the second, GCU took advantage of five walks and sent 10 men to the plate in a 5-run second. Third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) drove in two with a single and had five RBIs on the day.

Grand Canyon added one more in the third, three in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

While the offense was doing its job, the 'Lopes got a solid pitching performance for the fourth straight game. Sophomore Kevin Burbank (Phoenix, Ariz./Deer Valley) went five solid innings to earn the win. He retired 10 of the last 12 batters faced.

Canyon pounded out 14 hits and drew 12 walks. Sophomore center fielder Joey Bristyan (pictured on main page, Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) scored four runs and drew three walks. Sophomore shortstop P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Junior designated hitter Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) had three hits and three RBIs. Junior right fielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) scored four runs.

For the series, GCU hit .397. Garcia hit .667 (8-for-12), with a team-high nine RBIs and a .778 on-base percentage. The team earned run average is 4.78. Five of GCU's nine regulars hit over .417 for the weekend.
