Grand Canyon University freshman libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) has been named the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for his play last week.
At the Daytona 100 in Daytona Beach, Fla., Bruns averaged 4.64 digs per game in the four victories for the Antelopes.
Bruns is the first-ever recipient from GCU, which joined the MIVA this summer to play in the league that has gained national prominence with the likes of Ohio State, Ball State, Loyola-Chicago, Lewis, IPFW and Quincy.
"It's a good start," said Bruns. "It was a team effort, when everyone does their job it makes my job easier."
The Californian had a .967 serve reception percentage and had 65 total digs to help GCU go 4-0 on the weekend.
Bruns tied a school record with 19 digs in a Saturday afternoon 3-0 win over Lees-McRae and broke the mark, with 23 digs, in a 3-1 victory against Limestone that evening.
Bruns had 15 digs against Limestone on Friday.
He leads the MIVA in digs averaging 3.69 per game.
"I think we're maturing as a team," added Bruns on the Antelopes 4-0 weekend. "We knew we could beat those teams and we went ahead and did it."
Along with Bruns setting a new mark for digs, sophomore Nick Jensen (Herning, Denmark/Ikast Gymnasium/NJIT) set a new mark in kills (17) for a three-set match against Lees-McRae. Freshman Chris Lockwood (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) broke the record for blocks for a match with nine (four solos and five assists) in Friday's win over Limestone. Sophomore Brock Hutchins (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert/Hawai'i) tied the school record for kills in a match with 20 against Limestone Saturday.
