Following up the regular season with a strong performance in the Arizona Fall League, former Grand Canyon University pitcher Brian Broderick is getting closer to becoming the 14th former Antelope to make it to the big leagues.
Recently, Broderick, who plays in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, visited GCU and talked with current players.
“The big thing is the mental aspect of the game,” said Broderick of his recent rise. “You have to have a strong mental game. It’s all between the ears.”
In 2010, Broderick moved up to the Cardinals Double-A affiliate in Springfield, Missouri where he was the team’s Pitcher of the Year and a mid-season Texas League All-Star. He finished the season 11-2 with a 2.77 ERA. Combined with his stint at Single-A Palm Beach (Fla.), Broderick went 14-7.
Considered one of the organization’s top prospects, Broderick was invited to the prestigious Arizona league and was second in the league in wins with three. He finished 2010 with a combined record of 17-8.
“That’s a pretty phenomenal year,” said GCU coach Dave Stapleton, of his former player’s 17-win season. “When you’ve made it to Double-A, you’re not too far away from the big leagues.
“I’m excited for him and for our program.”
After starring at Phoenix Washington High School, Broderick played two seasons at Mesa Community College. He signed during the early period to Grand Canyon and was selected after his junior season in the 21st round (652nd overall) by the Cardinals.
“One of the nice parts about going to Grand Canyon, and one of the reasons I came, was it was just down the street,” said Broderick. “I knew the school was good and the baseball was an added bonus. The coaching staff here got me ready for the next level.”
Broderick isn’t certain where he’ll be to start the 2011 season. He’d love to start at the Cards’ Triple-A affiliate in Memphis, putting him just one step away from the big leagues.
