Wrestlers Hang Tough in Vegas

The Grand Canyon University wrestling team closed out the 2010 portion of their schedule this evening at the Division I dominated Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.

As was the case in the Antelopes victory over Embry-Riddle earlier this week, the upper weight classes led the charge.

Mike Fucci (Sacramento, CA, Colfax, Sierra College), wrestling at 157, went 2-2, defeating Cal State Fullerton’s Clayton Schulke,10-1, and Virginia Tech’s Chris Moon, 4-3.

All-American Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA, Grace M. Davis, Modesto College), wrestling at 174, opened the day with a dominating 14-1 win over Brown’s Jared Kay. After losing to the weights No. 1 ranked wrestler, Carazo rebounded to defeat Harvard’s Ian Roy, 3-1. His tournament ended with a hard fought 8-3 loss to Michigan’s Justin Zeerip.

After dropping his first match to the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 184, All-American Ryan Becerra (Gilbert, AZ, Highland ) rebounded to win a pair of matches. Included was a 5-2 win over Indiana’s Eric Cameron.

The tournament featured 36 schools, 31 of which came from Division I. GCU was the highest scoring non-Division I program.

“All in all this was a good experience for our guys,” said head coach R.C. LaHaye. “We could have gone and wrestled smaller tournaments, but we wanted to come here and face some top notch programs. We held our own and beat some very good wrestlers. We have wrestled a very strong Division I loaded schedule to date, but this will help us as we begin competing in Division II.”

The ‘Lopes will be off until they host the GCU Duals on Jan. 1. The Duals will feature some of best schools in all of Division II. Included in this year’s field (current ranking in parenthesis): Chadron State, Kutztown (19), Mesa State, Nebraska-Kearney (6), Newberry (4) and St. Cloud State (3).
