Grand Canyon is looking to continue momentum gathered at the GCU/Crowne Plaza December Classic when it plays host to Southwestern Bible College 6 p.m. Thursday at Antelope Gymnasium on Military Appreciation Night.
“It was really important to win our last two games and get a win (Thursday) to get back to .500 and give us a three-game winning streak going into conference,” said GCU junior guard
Nick Witherill (Phoenix, Ariz., Highland, Washington State).
With wins over Simon Fraser and Montana State Billings Dec. 17-18 in the classic, the Antelopes improved to 4-5.
“I feel we’ve really improved the last month,” said GCU coach Russ Pennell. “I’m seeing great signs as we hit the conference stretch.
“Our non-conference schedule has been very challenging and it was designed that way for the purpose of getting ready for PacWest.”
Thursday’s game with Southwestern is the final challenge of the non-conference season. It is the seventh meeting between the two Phoenix schools. GCU holds a 6-0 lead in the series. In an exhibition game last season, GCU beat Southwestern 101-79.
Steven Morin (Scottsdale, Ariz., Saguaro) had 33 points and
Justin Wesolowski (Mesa, Ariz., Mountain View, Northern Colorado) had 15.
Southwestern is 3-7.
Admission to Thursday’s game, and all GCU contests, is free. In lieu of an admission fee, GCU is accepting donations for Packages from Home. Recommended items are socks (men’s and ladies), t-shirts (M, L, XL, new only please), Boxer shorts (M, L, XL, new only please), toothbrushes (individually packaged) and tissue packs (travel size).
