The Grand Canyon University wrestling team ventured to Fullerton, Calif. and faced some stiff competition today as over 300 of the best wrestlers in the west were in action at the Cal State Fullerton Open.
Todd Wilcox (Sacramento, CA, Folsom, Sierra College) continued his strong start to the season, winning the 133-pound championship. Wilcox, who was 5-0 on the day, defeated Cal Poly’s Brandon Rocha, 3-1 in overtime, to claim the title for the second straight year.
Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA, Grace M. Davis, Modesto College) took home second-place honors today at 174 pounds, dropping the final 8-6 in overtime, to Arizona State’s nationally ranked Eric Starks. Carazo had defeated Starks 3-2 at Antelope Gymnasium on Nov. 13. Carazo also finished second at the Cal State Fullerton Open last season.
Ryan Becerra (Gilbert, AZ, Highland ) rebounded from a tough weekend against ASU, to finish fourth at 184 pounds. He won his first two matches in convincing fashion today, before dropping the semi-final match to ASU’s Jake Meredith.
Ryan Miller (Tempe, AZ, Corona Del Sol ), wrestling unattached for GCU at 157, finished the day at 3-2, losing in the quarters to eventual winner Tyler Chang of Embry-Riddle.
GCU will be off until Dec. 1, when it will travel to Prescott Valley, Ariz. for a dual with Embry-Riddle. The ‘Lopes will then travel to Las Vegas, Nev. on Dec. 3-4 for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
