Grand Canyon University is ranked No. 6 in the West Region in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll, released this morning.
The Antelopes (6-2-1 overall in the poll, now 7-2-1, 5-1-1 in the Pacific West Conference) were ranked No. 4 in last week's poll, but they tied BYU-Hawaii 2-2 in double overtime on Thursday and lost to the Seasiders 2-1 on Saturday. BYU-Hawaii took over first place in the PacWest after the win on Saturday, but GCU regained the top spot by beating Hawaii Pacific 3-0 last night.
BYU-Hawaii plays Dixie State, currently in third place in the conference, tonight at St. George, Utah. The 'Lopes and Sea Warriors meet again at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the GCU Soccer Field in the finale of a four-game, eight-day homestand.
Ranked ahead of GCU in this week's poll are No. 1 Western Washington (8-1-1), No. 2 Cal State Los Angeles (6-2-0), No. 3 Cal State Stanislaus (7-2-0), No. 4 Seattle Pacific (7-1-2) and No. 5 Montana State Billings (7-2-1).
SPU was ranked first in last week's poll, but the Falcons were tied 0-0 at home by Simon Fraser and lost 1-0 at home to Western Washington. Montana State Billings was ranked third last week, but the Yellowjackets lost 3-2 at home to Saint Martin's.
The 'Lopes are the only PacWest team ranked in this week's poll. BYU-Hawaii would be included, probably at No. 5, but is omitted probably because of some sort of technical snafu such as non-payment of NSCAA dues. Only nine teams are included in this week's rankings, suggesting that one team that belongs in them has been left out for an undisclosed reason.
Ranked behind GCU are No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-2-1), San Francisco State (6-2-2) and UC San Diego (6-2-2).
Five of the nine schools are members of the California Collegiate Athletic Conference and three belong to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
In the national poll, Western Washington is ranked No. 9, Cal State Los Angeles is No. 15 and Cal State Stanislaus is No. 24. Saint Rose (N.Y.) is the nation's top-ranked team with a 10-0-0 record, and Central Missouri is second at 9-0-0.
