Antelopes sweep pair from Mustangs
Michelle Farrell was warming up near trainer Bill Kuehl's hot dog grill before the second game with a twinkle in her eye. Her teammates were offering words of encouragement.
There was something different about this day to be in Purple and Black. Something to the tune of two wins different.
Grand Canyon swept a doubleheader from Western New Mexico Sunday, winning 2-0 and 5-2. The Antelopes (3-4-1) won three of the four games against the Mustangs (1-3) this weekend at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
"I was real happy with our run production this weekend, especially after last weekend," Lopes coach Ann Pierson said. "That was one of our biggest struggles."
Farrell picked up her first win of the year in the second game, going 6 2/3 innings without allowing a run until WNMU's Rebecca Reynolds drove a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field fence. Farrell struck out four, allowed four hits and three walks.
Megan Niver evened her record at 2-2 with a win in the opener. She went the distance, allowing four hits and a walk to record the Antelopes' first shutout of the season.
"Pitching was better in both games," Pierson said. "I was OK with our pitching yesterday, too. Megan threw another tight game. Michelle threw the ball well, and hit the ball well at the plate."
Farrell went 1 for 3 with an RBI in the second game. Yasmeen Watkins (pictured) went 2 for 3 with an RBI single in the first inning of the opener. She was 1 for 3, stoled two bases and drove in two runs in the second game.
"She worked really hard this week in letting the ball get deep and seeing the ball better," Pierson said of Watkins. "She is a confident kid, and doesn't allow off games to distract her because she knows what she's capable of doing."
Randi Johns went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base in the second game, and had a base hit and was hit by two pitches in the first game. Jamie Stacy went 1 for 2 with an RBI single in the first game.
"We feel like we have the momentum," Pierson said as her team prepares to play in the Schutt Invitational beginning 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix. "It's certainly nice to have the momentum of playing three good games and having the potential of playing the fourth to win that one as well. There's still some things to improve on."
