Watkins named PacWest Player of Week

Junior second baseman Yasmeen Watkins was named the PacWest Player of the Week Monday.

Watkins, a transfer from Central Arizona College, hit .474 at the Schutt Sports/Leadoff Classic at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix last weekend. She went 9 for 19 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI.

"This has never happened to me before," Watkins said. "It's actually, in my opinion, kind of humbling (and forces me) to stay consistent. I don't want to burn out early."

In two years at Central Arizona, Watkins never received ACCAC Player of the Week honors. She was a first team ACCAC selection last year and second team all-conference pick in 2006. This season, she is making the transition from outfield to second base.

"I'm trying to get my flow back," Watkins said. "It's coming along, but I still have to make progress."

Currently, Watkins shares the team's top batting average (.386) with senior center fielder Sydney Reyes. Watkins has three home runs, three doubles and 12 RBI.

"I just work every day in practice, using 80 percent of my swing, just making sure I make contact," Watkins said. "When I went out this weekend, my goal was just to get singles. Instead of leaving people on base, I wanted to make sure I drove people in.

"As a complete player, I still have to improve on things."
