Softball 3-24-08 GCU splits doubleheader with CUH Grand Canyon University split a doubleheader with Chaminade University Monday at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium, losing the first game 6-3 and winning the second 5-1. It was the Antelopes' first games in 17 days since wrapping up an eight-game road trip in Hawaii. Grand Canyon (10-13-1, 5-5 PacWest) jumped on Chaminade (9-16, 4-10) in the first inning in both games. In the opener, the 'Lopes scored two runs on a triple by Jamie Stacy. Stacy went 2 for 4 with two RBI. Chaminade scored once in the second and tied the game in the fifth before tacking on three runs in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. The Silverswords added another run in the sixth. GCU cut the gap to two runs when Strohm Fouty tripled to lead off the seventh, and Sydney Reyes singled her home. But after the Lopes loaded the bases on a pair of walks to Tana Holtorf and Randi Johns, Chaminade reliever Kasy'e Lalau retired three straight batters to close the door for her third save of the year. Holtorf (pictured) was 2 for 3 with a triple and a double. Fouty and Reyes were each 2 for 4. Megan Niver went 2 for 3. In the second game, GCU scored five runs on four hits in the first inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Holtorf and Johns. Yasmeen Watkins singled up the middle to drive in a run, Stacy scored on an error and Michelle Farrell drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Chaminade never recovered, scoring a run in the sixth. The Antelopes outhit the Swords 10-7 in Game 1 and 7-5 in Game 2. Farrell was the winning pitcher in the second game, going the distance and allowing five hits, a run and a walk and struck out seven. Watkins was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Fouty went 2 for 3 with a stolen base. Holtorf, Johns and Erica Ritter were each 1 for 3. Grand Canyon hosts Chaminade in a doubleheader beginning at noon Tuesday. Hall of Famers Sis King and Billie Harris are expected to be in attendance. |
