Forget about the hitting part. If Grand Canyon finds the pitching, this team could be dangerous.
GCU proved that again Saturday morning as it run-ruled Western New Mexico, 10-2, in five innings in the third straight win for the Antelopes at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix. The Antelopes (9-3) are scheduled to play New Mexico Highlands at 2 p.m. today at Rose Mofford.
Freshman Kara Holtorf (pictured) went 4 for 4 with a triple and four RBI in her best game as an Antelope. She scored three runs, crossing the plate in each of the first three innings. Her triple to right-center in the second gave the Lopes a 3-2 lead in what became the gamewinning RBI.
Tracy Lubken was 2 for 2 with two sacrifices and three runs batted in. Lubken has driven in eight runs in the past two games.
Starter Jessica Palma (5-1) allowed two runs on five hits, no walks and no strikeouts in the win.
Kelli Bridges went 2 for 2, and Randi Johns 2 for 3 with two RBI. Yasmeen Watkins stoled her second base of the year in a 1 for 2 effort, driving in GCU's first run when the Lopes trailed 2-0 after a half inning.
Sammi Tiefenthaler is expected to start in the 2 p.m. game at Rose Mofford, which is located on 25th Avenue, south of Peoria in Phoenix.
