SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Who would've thunk it? Not after two straight games of marquee basketball.
Grand Canyon men's basketball team lost its first game of the season Wednesday, 67-52, at Western New Mexico. The Antelopes struggled shooting the ball, hitting 35 percent of their shots on a night, where the up-tempo pace was slowed to a mere wimper in GCU standards.
Milee Karre (pictured) was the only Grand Canyon player who reached double figures. He scored 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Rudy Bogan and Brad Kanis each had eight points for the 'Lopes (2-1). Western New Mexico (3-1) picked up 13 points apiece from Casey Crevelone and DJ Nicholas, and Trey Clarkson had 12.
Ladi Makinde grabbed eight boards, and Ty Morrison had six for the Antelopes, which will take a 10-day layoff before suiting up against Cal State Dominguez Hills on the road.
GCU trailed 25-15 12:36 into the first half, but the Antelopes went on a 10-0 run, capped off by Milee Karre's three-pointer to knot the game at 25. WNMU used a 13-4 surge to start the second half to push its lead up to 14, but GCU chipped away, closing to within eight on a pair of free throws by Karre with 4:24 to go. But the Antelopes managed just one bucket the rest of the way.
