Grand Canyon sweeps Dominguez Hills
CARSON, Calif. -- Like the ole ball coach said, when all parts are working right, they'll take their chances withanyone.
Grand Canyon had all parts working in the second game of a doubleheader Friday, beating host Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-0, behind a three-hit shutout by Samantha Tiefenthaler.
It was Tiefenthaler's best outing of the season. She went the distance to improve to 7-2. It was Tiefenthaler's first shutout this year, and it marked the first time she's given up just three hits this year. Earlier in the season, she allowed five hits in a complete game win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
GCU (16-3) scored in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings, pounding 11 hits. Yasmeen Watkins was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Randi Johns was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI.
Every Grand Canyon batter had a hit, minus Kara Holtorf, whose school record-tying 10-game hitting streak came to an end. Nicole Lorenzi (pictured) has hit safely in six of her last eight games. She collected a hit in both games Friday.
Grand Canyon's sweep over Dominguez Hills dropped the Toros to under .500 at 5-7. It was the second time GCU has swept Dominguez Hills, and Friday's two wins improved the Antelopes series record against CSDH to 6-13. Grand Canyon lost its only meeting with Dominguez Hills last year.
